We all know the internet has it’s own language. Some lingo has even crossed overn to become a part of the English language (Lol, IRL, OMG, and WTF). The first time I went on imgur and Reddit I had a whole new vocabulary to learn, what with the TL;DR (too long; didn’t read), MRW (my reaction when), and NSFW (Not safe for work). Plus, there is all that Twitter lingo I’m still trying to figure out! MMOs, and SWTOR in particular, have their own lingo in game also. Some of it is necessary for game play, and some of it is strictly there for talking shit. Here’s my compilation of the need to knows, and my personal favorites.
EV, KP, EC, TFB, SnV, DF, DP- The different SWTOR operations. Eternity Vault, Karagga’s Palace, Explosive Conflict, Terror From Beyond, Scum and Villany, Dread Fortress, and Dread Palace.
Casual- Players who enjoy the game for the game itself or takes a more laid back approach to gaming. Sometimes an insult or used in a joking manner, i.e. “That guy is a casual” or “Crit is for casuals.”
Hardcore- Often elitest jerks who do highly competitive game play involving a massive time sink. Or used by Wildstar Devs who think they’ll be cooler if they use it every time they need to breath when talking.
Try Hard- Often an insult used in PvP. Use of grenades in regs is the best way to get called this.
Game is hard- Usually a form of sarcasm when someone does something they shouldn’t do, implying the game is easy. I hear this a lot from PvPers (who obviously think they are the coolest people in existence and best players ever).
Believe- Word of encouragement and optimism when it looks grim in that PvP match or arena.
Many mans- What you yell when you are running away from a node you just tried to cap and the whole other team randomly shows up.
Halp!- Help, but way cuter.
OoM (or OoF)- Out of Mana, or in SWTOR, Out of Force
Jawa (something)- A favorite of the fleet general chat, the Jawa game. People add Jawa to popular movie titles. Example: Honey I Shrunk the Jawas, Jawasic Park, The Wizard of Jawa, Full Metal Jawa, and the Dark Jawa Rises.
Gank Squad- A PvP premade comprised of all stealth classes. Perfect for Novare Coast. Or...
Spawn Camping- killing players repeatedly at the spawn point.
Rekt- Wrecked. Though I personally think anyone who can’t just type out wrecked is silly.
Yolo- Originally “You Only Live Once” but applied to SWTOR Solo Ranked as you can only live once. Plus, Yolo and Solo are too close for it not to have caught on. Not to mention all the melee mercs and sorc who Force Speed/ Kolto Overrides to 5 meters of the other team. Also known as “yolo’ing”.
Smashmonkey- Maras/Sent and Jugs/Guardians who only know how to play smash spec.
FoTM- Flavor of the Month. Constantly changing based on which advanced classes are currently the best due to imbalance. Right now, juggs and madness sorcs.
M8- Mate. Because the loss of oceanic servers means we all have to listen to random Aussie lingo, and accents (Not that I’m complaining though.)
Hype- When no one will shut up about something being amazing. Or when everyone is excited about something.
Tab Dot- When Snipers/Gunslinger or Sorcs/Sages tab thru targets at random and apply dots for massive, unfocused, damage.
Back peddle- When players S-key to walk backwards. Prolonged backpeddling is a sign of badness. Especially if Force Speed is used while doing it.
