Remember the days of Battlemaster Bags? When Huttball pops were never ending and Bolster was yet to confuse and annoy us? I do. I often look fondly back at the time when Operative DPS ruled (and then didn't) and things were simpler. But I don't have to look that far to find another relic of the past, Valor.
A long, long time ago, Valor meant something. There was an actual purpose for it. Now it's just that guy you see everywhere that used to be cool but no one cares about now. Ok, that was a stretch and a little harsh; but really, who cares about Valor anymore? I honestly haven't read that little box on the scoreboard in a while now. All my characters are Valor 80 (at least), and I never level anything new. Plus, since I only really play Maylstrom, I just grind gear for all my alts on her and Legacy the stuff over. Valor hasn't affected my PvP life in a while now. So when a Guildie brought it up the other day, it was a blast from the past.
It's still required to have Valor 40 to exchange Regular Commendations for Ranked Commendations and gear tokens. This is the reason my Guildie was talking about Valor in the first place. He had recently hit 55 and was complaining that he needed to hit Valor 40 to start getting Brutalizer pieces. Having power leveled during a Double XP weekend doing the KDY grind, he was only now starting to PvP and therefor he had a low Valor level. With full Obroan already, and no way to turn in, he'd have to buy medpacs just to keep from being maxed out on commendations while he got to Valor 40. Valor was holding him back from moving forward. Sure, it's a way to eat up all those Valor Boosts from Cartel Packs that are sitting in your cargo hold, but that doesn't mean the statistic is actually helpful. While it's purpose and value is there, it's antiquated in its application and sometimes counterproductive in its purpose. While PvP has changed, it hasn't.
Another aspect to Valor was the Achievements and Titles it granted; Skirmisher (Rank 10), Duelist (Rank 20), Gladiator (Rank 30), Centurion (Rank 40), Champion (Rank 50), Battlemaster (Rank 60), War Hero (Rank 70), Conqueror (Rank 80), Warlord (Rank 90), and Elite Warlord ( Rank 100). Back in the day, this was the only way measure who was good at PvP and who wasn't. Those with higher win rates and MVP votes got valor quicker. People displayed their PvP titles with pride and it was a status symbol. The first person to Elite Warlord on a server was a God. There were also Valor specific gear sets and the Korrealis mounts from the PvP vendors as rewards to top players. I remember when mergers happened and everyone had their Elite Warlord tags out and mounts to see who was competition.
I guess my issue here is that valor is simply a forgotten mechanic. They haven't touched it since launch even though PvP is completely different. Valor needs to evolve to the PvP of now, and how the game is being played. Where is the increase in valor cap? With that, how about some cool new titles or rewards? Give PvPers some more incentives to play and goals to work towards. The great thing about valor is that it's a pure PvP stat. It doesn't matter if you are doing Regs or Ranked, you get it in both. It can benefit you in both. You earn it either way, lets make it worth something again. Or, here's an idea, why not have Valor be an aspect of matchmaking? Raise the cap and have it be another determining factor in matchmaking. Wouldn't it be safe to assume that those with lower Valor have less experience or gear. Is adding more data for the matchmaking logic to consider a bad thing?
So, what do you think, should the Devs rework Valor? After an Elite Warlord, what titles would be cool? It doesn't seem like increasing the cap and re-skinning some items for rewards would be that hard, so should we suggest it?
