Since I’m now a casual in SWTOR, I’m taking the opportunity to branch out and play some different games. I did some ARAM, leveled some in WoW, and practiced my FPS skills in this random Flash game. Meanwhile, my friend Adam had been pestering me for weeks over whether I had tried Hots yet, because he loved it. Now, I’ve been waiting to get back on the Blizzard Band Wagon for a while. I’m pretty sure WoW is going to be my “competitive” PvE game, and I know I have a nerd chubby for Overwatch, but Hots hadn't really jumped out at me with needing to play it. Adam wouldn't stop bothering me about it though, so I gave it a shot. One week later I’m level 20, sunk some money into a unicorn mount, and am pretty much addicted.
So, what is Heroes of the Storm?
Hots is a moba (multiplayer online battle arena), which is basically just team PvP with a sprinkling of PvE. The format is 5v5 and on one of 6 random maps. You play as a Hero. There are many heroes, but only some are available based on what is on that week’s rotation or what you own. It has all your basic roles; tank, damage (or adc), and support (or heals). The Hero characters are all taken from the various Blizz games; WoW, Starcraft, and Diablo. I’d imagine once Overwatch comes out those characters will be added to the game. There really isn't any story in this game, just quick tutorial which explain where you are, The Nexus, and how you got there.'
A lot of people have asked me, “Hows Hots different from League /Dota?”
First off, it’s more objective based. In League, you spend a lot of time killing minions in the lanes, but in Hots each map's objectives are a significant part of winning. You still kill minions for xp, but when the objective phase begins, that's your priority. The xp is shared amongst your whole team and there is no last hitting. Additionally, there are no items in Hots. As you level, different skills become available to you. These are either buffs to your initial abilities or passives, or new abilities.
The characters I play most often are Brightwing, a support, and Diablo, a tank. Brightwing is very similar to Lulu in League. I really like aggressive support characters and her heals are pretty solid. I also get to turn people in animals which is awesome.
If you’re more into doing the deeps, try Rayner, a ranged, or Kerrigan, who is melee. Both are free character on the Hero rotation and are pretty easy to pick up. I especially like playing Kerrigan and I usually hate melee classes.
While Hots is in closed Beta, odds are if you have been a long time Blizz player you can play. If not, you can sign up for one or keep an eye out, there have been quite a few giveaways lately. Do any of you play Hots? Who are you favorite Heros. What are your favorite maps? Wanna group sometime?
